Sex Drive

This song brings an image of the scene from Fight Club where Brad Pitt lets go of the wheel. Granted, this track has far more sexual suggestions than the scene of Brad Pitt and Ed Norton in a car. The track is dark and aggressive, in your face electro -just the way I like it. Enjoy!

In The Shade

The weather has been great, and a need for a song to chill "In The Shade" to has become a need. The track is nice and laid back, but not too sleepy. I really adhere to the confident breakdown with a simple shaker and the kick drum. Insert slight head nod, and relax. Enjoy!

Everytime

When I hear tracks like this my brain immediately goes into dual processing mode. 50% is enjoying the new cut, and how great all of the sounds go together, the other half is rapidly searching the cobwebbed recesses of my memory banks for where I've heard that sample before. More than the trip down Janet Jackson memory lane, I appreciate this track for what it is: a good deep house tune. Enjoy!

Dyatolv Will Pass

This beautiful electronic track set to a foundation of piano shares feelings of low temperature melancholy and patience. I was unaware of the Dylatov Pass incident prior to hearing this song and looking up Dylatov. The heavy echo lyrics do most of the mood shifting, and the record snaps and pops  are like a vintage Instagram filter for the song. Enjoy!

Such Great Heights

Have you ever been dancing to a CD that all of a sudden starts skipping? The knee jerk reaction is to yell out "remix!!" followed by a laugh. That's what we've learned from so many remixes being a sped up version of the original with a heavy four on the floor beat underneath. Not this track. Team Bayside High (amazing name) took the Postal Service's song to outer space. The signature soft synth rally is celebrated and accentuated. They really focused on ways to further beautify an already beautiful and rather intimidating track. I think they did a great job. Enjoy!

My Delirium

Few things grab me as hard as confident and empowered female vocals. Ladyhawke's lower register lyrics fit perfectly on this slightly laid back version of My Delirium. I enjoy the choice to set the vocals back a bit, as opposed to the traditional front, center, and forward. This makes the song feel less poppy and more connected to regular human beings. Enjoy!

Wine Tasting 2013

I went wine tasting with family and friends over President's Day weekend in the central California region of Paso Robles. I've gone wine tasting plenty of times, but never with a dedicated soundtrack. Short car rides fill the time between wineries where we pay attention to maps, navigating, planning, winery discussion as well as plenty of other matters leaving the soundtrack as last priority. But these little car rides add up, and between the 8 wineries visited on Sunday, there was over an hour spent in the car. Luckily this wasn't my first rodeo, and I came prepared.

Selecting music for a van full of people who are spending the day swirling, sniffing, standing, and snacking, was a daunting task.  Knowing what I do about my friends and family, I was aware that the playlist would frustrate if there wasn't a healthy inclusion of familiar tunes. I did my best to include well known tracks that remind me of the nuances encompassing wine tasting and all activities that come with wine tasting, while leveraging the remainder for tracks less known.

The flow of the playlist was just as important as the track selection. I didn't want to lump long songs next to each other, nor did I want a stretch of cheesy or obscure songs. All the while, this is wine tasting we're talking about here, an enjoyable occasion meant for taking time to relish in the luxuries of fine crafted alcohols.

Most of the tracks speak for themselves, however I do like providing commentary regarding track selection so I'll give a few notes. The opening song is the opening song from The Little Mermaid, I love the energy, nostalgia, and brevity of this song. Of course, I was humming Red Red Wine in almost every tasting room, I mean, c'mon. The primary decision to include the song Hannah was to introduce a friend of the same name to the track, and it's a great song. Billy Joel's Piano Man is the epitome of a drunk singing song, and by song 7 you've got the initial wine tasting buzz, this track hit perfect. Cat Stevens probably was the best received track, something about his rich voice belting out over that true guitar makes wine taste better. XXYYXX's track was a bit slow, but I love the vibrations that this song gives off, especially after a few rounds of tasting.

Garth Brooks is normally not on the California city dwelling music listener's sound palate, but this song was received far better than I dreamed, it's fun to have friends in low places apparently. Comfortably Numb kicked off the 7th inning stretch followed by some soft and easy to listen to tracks with jazzy influence. The perfect closer for this ride was Lissie's cover of Kid Cudi's Pursuit of Happiness. I love her opening monologue, tequila shot and all. Enjoy!

No Names

This stripped down male/female song reminds me of something off the Juno soundtrack. A guitar, violin, and xylophone provide an innocent and introspective feel to the song. I feel like the typical intellectual teen of an indie rom-com finding myself when I play this track, which is a welcome break from my current reality. Enjoy!

No Soul

This throwback takes its time to get up to speed, but does so beautifully and allows me to appreciate the subtle refinement of the song. There's a synchronization, like that of an assembly line, that I envision through the first few minutes. The track isn't too aggressive or intrusive, it walks a fine line and that is the aspect that I enjoy the most. Enjoy!

Outside

This beachy washed out tune brings memories of Southern Californian sun-drenched days to this SoCal boy's memory. The weekend was so nice, and I spent so much time outside that this song was remembered. The track is youthful and carefree until "a long time ago" starts resonating again and again, adding nostalgia, reflection, and even regret. Seize the outdoors when you can. Enjoy!

Select Sundays: Money

This track is just classic neo-soul. Nicole Wray and Terri Walker don't even have an album yet, but I'm super excited for their partnership. You can call this a throwback. But it's really a throw down. Forget Beyonce's "Independent Women" and Ne-Yo's "Miss Independent," this is the empowerment jam.

Be Your Girl

There's a huge movement of old R&B tracks sampled, remixed, and redone with a heavy deep house influence. This track doesn't necessarily fit into that category, as the original is about 10 years younger than most of the R&B songs I've seen re-emerging as deep house tracks. This track is done well, I'm hooked when that cartoony-bounce comes in and quickly disappears leaving me listening for more. Enjoy!

Trailer Music

The first time I heard this track I had no idea what was going on, am I listening to a commercial for Christmas decorations in Japanese? The track is short, but once that middle of the track hit with sounds flying left and right my interest was piqued. Then the kick drum stepped in and all bets were off, I loved it! and as soon as it came it was gone, under 2 minutes with the up and down of a roller coaster. Enjoy!

This Thing Of Ours

At first I was attracted to the industrial sample sounds that grace the background of this track. The devil is in the details and the details are where my attentions normally head straight towards. Rainy's voice has a mature soul, one that's lived in the dungeons of jazz bars, but it's still silky smooth. Enjoy!

Wait Up (Boots of Danger)

One of my rules of thumb is that anything RAC touches needs to be listened to immediately. Tracks like this inspired me to start blogging about music. This track in particular makes great use of arrangement to showcase the lyrics. I get the urge to dance my butt off and sweat till my hair is wet when I hear this track. Enjoy!

Recover

This track has tons of electro, pop, and glam. I want to have something to recover from when I hear it. The song is very indicative of right now, how things are and what early 2013 sounds like. Her voice is great, it has a cuteness and a vulnerability, but lacks the whiny-pop sound that I find in so much indie-pop-electro right now. Enjoy!

Merrymaking At My Place

Before Calvin Harris was the household EDM name collaborating with mega-pop stars he was making fun and goofy tracks like this one. This track is fun and simple, but executed perfectly. From the "oh, OH" to the falsetto chorus to the basic premise of being the one who's throwing a huge house party. I always picture the quintessential 80's movie house party when rocking to this song. Enjoy!

Australia

This track mesmerizes me. I find the piano comforting in the beginning, his voice is perfect, the drums march on like an infantry, and when it comes together there's something beautiful that's been created. The lyrics talk of destruction and apathy, but there's more to it and that's for you to interpret. Enjoy!

Get The Money

"Get The Money" womp womp womp. That's what first got my attention in this song. After a few listens I started to appreciate that this track has much more to offer. There are delicate parts, that include sounds of strings, dancing synths, and swooping breakdowns. I greatly appreciate a dynamic track like this from a composition perspective. And of course, I love the sample. Enjoy!

The Fall

This shiny upbeat track comes across as innocent and fun. I was somehow in need of a lighthearted tune today, and this one comes to me with just the right amount of positivity. Listening to the original track by Rhye allows me to enjoy this remix even more. The original is a beautiful track in itself, but the touches put on by Mannequine have so much original composition that I appreciate. Enjoy!

City

I've seen Thao perform, and my socks were knocked off. She's got a very raw and rash style, which I am magnetically drawn to. This song has great energy and attitude. I enjoy how the track swings up and down along the drum line. I adore the filter that Thao throws over her vocals. Enjoy!

Inspector Norse

I'm completely captivated by the space age sounds that happen in the first seven seconds of this song.  This innocent doodle of a tune has remarkable beginnings, outlined in an award winning short film titled "Whateverest". If anything you owe it to yourself to watch the first minute of the film, it explains plenty. The song is a playful disco inspired tune that has probably rocked a dance floor near you in the recent past. Enjoy!
