Oh Sailor

I appreciate how this song starts heavy into the electronic sound, and continues down the path. It isn't until 2/3 of the way through the digital feeling slowly strips away for a break of pure analog children's choir and piano. The original is equally as interesting and enjoyable to listen to, but this remix is more my style and speed. Enjoy!

Hyperactive

Bubble gum, rainbows, and puppy dogs. This track is pop at it's best. I feel like not giving a care, and doing fun and frivolous things with good looking people and shiny colors. I love the breakdown that sounds like it features a ukelele. The choir backing up the main vocals add that 'friend' aspect to the song, and before your sugar rush is over, so is the track. Enjoy!

Dancing Anymore

This track starts out so damn strong. It's simple, but it hooks the listener deep. The track opens with her voice say "No I won't", over a bassline and a kickdrum. What won't she do, what's coming in next, cause I know the track can't go on with just a bassline and kickdrum. A bit of electric guitar and then a spray of bullets from the snare drum. The track goes on to some male vocals saying "you won't take me dancing anymore" which is backwards from the standard narrative of the woman in a relationship having a complaint of not being taken out dancing anymore. I appreciate that this goes against the predictable, and sounds so good while doing so. Enjoy!

The End Starts Today Mixtape #8

It feels so good to complete a mixtape, even if the previous mixtape was posted in January. It was late March or early April this year that I compiled the list of songs for this mixtape, I ran through a practice or two, then let life slow the process to a halt. Here I am in the end of October and finally the songs have been recorded together! I don't feel that this mix is perfect, I could have gone back and fixed a few things -but sometimes it's better to set down and move on. That's what I feel this mixtape is for me, moving on and hopefully getting back into the mode of making more mixtapes for this site. Enjoy!

Tracklist:

  1. Fuck & Run - K.Flay
  2. Me & U - Laymedown
  3. Your Girl - Tourist
  4. Step - Vampire Weekend
  5. Falling In Love - Vario
  6. Pizza Guy - Touch Sensitive
  7. Open (Jeff Samuel Faded Mix) - Rhye
  8. Bankrupt - Phoenix

Seen It All

Jake is all things british rock and roll to me. He's got great lyrics, backed by a simple arrangement with classic band elements. What makes this song interesting to me is that he sounds like a young guy singing in an old guy's style. Furthermore he talks about seeing it all, which is usually reserved for people with age, as age brings experience (most of the time). So to me, it's interesting that a young guy has seen it all, or thinks he has, and he's telling us about it. Enjoy!

Where Are You

This track is reminiscent of late 90's early 2000's techno music. The beat, the imagery, the voice, the message, and the over all feel of this song transport me to my days of rave. I greatly enjoy the style and vein of the song, it's colorful and loving. The song celebrates the belief of love, beauty, and dreams. Enjoy!

Lies and Alabis

This track can relate on so many levels. As the sample "Lies and Alabis" echoes over and over my thoughts ponder from relationship issues between a feuding couple, to nations going to war and the political meltdown associated with the terrors of war. He said, she said, they said,  we said. The flute stands alone on this track, representing the individual among chaos. The track is woven together tightly and eases through each second until -it's over. Enjoy!

La Funky

Sometimes you need a hard hitting track that's high energy, full of intensity, and not annoyingly boring and repetitive. This track does that for me. The builds and breaks aren't overly cheesy, the boomy bass drop makes me wanna get grooving or take over the world. Either works really, when this song is playing. Enjoy!

Start Stop

This song has some pretty great starts and stops. It sounds like an electric instrument jam session with a very cohesive bunch of players. The stutters are forceful and aggressive, but then there are offsetting playful sounds sprinkled in between the anticipated starts and stops. Enjoy!

Headphones

Let's get carefree and enjoy the pretty days that we're given. I've got a thing for headphones, I own 5-6 pairs of decent headphones and I never leave home without a set of earbuds just in case. Sometimes I do have my "headphones on from the minute I'm up till the minute I go to bed". There's more good music than there is time in a life to hear it all, so we can only attempt to. I could write all day about how I love the intimacy that headphones create, the value of dollars to sound that headphones provide, and how songs can be completely different on speakers vs headphones. But I'll just replay this song a few times and let those thoughts jump around with the tune. Enjoy!

Sweater Weather

I dig how this song showcases the elements of current indie-pop melodies, that the original demonstrates so well. The remix gives the song more body and dimension for me. The more dramatic sounds, with emphasis on filtered vocal timing and more pronounced bass lines is more interesting to my ear.  And really, I can't get enough of this part of the song:
"one love,
two mouths.
one love,
one house.
no shirt,
no blouse."
Enjoy!

Woodwork

"Step by step, I watch them, crawling out of the woodwork" This line for some reason works for me, maybe because of his accent. This low key track nearly convinces me that it's okay to give up, sit up against a wall, and just let the shit hit the fan. Things will go south, just let it, you'll get used to it. Enjoy!

Blackie

The melody of her vocals caught my ear on first listen, especially at the beginning where she's listing out descriptions of her baby. The synths bring me to night time, and the hand claps and piano fuel the desire to move to the tunes. With the slower bpm that this song has, I feel the desire to make a stronger emphasis on each down beat. Enjoy!

The Hardest Part

Kisses pays homage to the 80's and the birth of synth-pop, melded with the modern styles and techniques which results in a fantastic sound. The style throws me back to when bad hair, bright colors, and not taking things too seriously was the way of life. This song also makes me want go outside, and keep the day moving, vs sitting inside hiding away from the world. Enjoy!

Photomation

The sharp flat synths that open the track remind me of the laser lights flying between high rise buildings. Or maybe they remind me of the amazing sound coming out of France right now in the form of undeniably danceable electronic music. Beyond the amazing tone and imagery provided by the synths is the melody of her vocals. I must have listened to this track 10 times while hearing the vocals as just another instrument, it wasn't until much later than I gave the words an actual listen. Because the melody flows that well with the music. Enjoy!

Say It

There's a lot of nice layers that create this song. Up front and first to bat are those golden shimmery synths that catch your ear like finger tips and superglue.  I love how the layers subtly tack on while keeping the main focus those amazing metallic vibrations. And then the vocal sample hits, what a great line "say you'll never let me go, say you'll never let me go". The song can be sentimental, sexy, reflective, or all of those feelings and more, the track is complex and that's what I like about it. Enjoy!

Primative People

One of my friends lives in Ibiza, Spain during the summer season every year. He reported back that this was one of the biggest songs of the summer, and after 1 listen I could see why. The long and minimal intro of bells and snare allow this song to meld deep into the previous song, building huge mix in anticipation for any DJ set. Then that bass. Oh the bass can make or break a song, and this song is beyond made when that unique bass line comes sliding over the kick drum. Things continue to get better from there. close your eyes, turn the stereo up as loud as you can get away with, and let the magic do it's work with this track. Enjoy!

Give You Up

Yuksek tracks are no stranger to this blog, and there's good reason for that. The first beat, with that energetic high-hat tells you right away that this song will make you want to dance.  The electronic wobble makes me want to move my hands and legs in sync with the rhythm. KLP's vocals are a perfect match, with her quick delivery of "neverevergonnagiveyouup". Everything comes together real well on this remix, I've been shakin' my stuff to it, you should too. Enjoy!

Your Planet

Chrome Sparks never disappoints.  The sound of rain in the background makes me envision this song as being a quiet Sunday afternoon with no plans, no friends, and no problems. One of those days where thoughts bounce in and out of your mind, but you end up reflecting and relaxing  more than anything else. The sounds in this song, like the dings of bells, and rolling synths flowing on top of the deep bass notes slowly shuffle like clouds casually passing. And of course there's the laugh, mid track, which I love. Enjoy!

Outlines

Pat Lok's spin on the Outlines track is excellent work. Pushing her voice into the background, and pulling some smooth and soothing sounds out from the back and into the front was a nice choice. I love the opening, and then how this song comes together to be a deep dark groove.  Of course the deep groove can be attributed to the incredible bassline, but that's hardly the only standout of this track. Enjoy!

Feel Like Movin'

This song does have me feelin' like moving! I love Nancy's monotone and almost emotionless vocals especially how they contrast the infectiously danceable beat. This song makes me want to dance hard with a straight face, it's made for serious groovin'. Though her vocals are rather monotone as previously mentioned, the melody of her vocals are great. I've had this song stuck in my head for the past week. Enjoy!

Night

I love their accents, something amazing happens when we hear accents from far away lands. There's an innocence in this song, perhaps I get that impression from the cheerful sounds chosen.  Or perhaps the boy/girl vocals that seem to hold hands through the song give me that impression. I love the slight syncopation mismatch with the chorus and the medley, it enhances the track and makes it more memorable. Enjoy!

Dragg

This fun song gives me images of sepia pictures and instagram filters. Perhaps it's the memory of the always amazingly enjoyable 2nd month of dating. The track has a great flow, and is deceptively long clocking over 4 1/2 minutes. This sorta makes me yearn for summer, as right now we've just wound down the glorious season and are on to the fall time. Enjoy!
