Select Sundays: Earth Angel
Now I'm not overly fond of posting covers but this one is a gem. I've been long obsessed with La Bamba the movie and subsequently, Ritchie Valens. Everyone knows this song of course, and the original is fantastic, as well as the New Edition version, but this is a contemporary version I can one hundred percent get behind. Death Cab put out this track for a video game, Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse. What? Yes, exactly.

I love my records, and I'm finally getting around to them.
It started in the early 2000's with a halfway-impulse purchase of my two Technics SL-1200 MK3D turntables and a Vestax 05-Pro mixer. In order to pull it off I split the purchase across two credit cards resulting in maxing one card out.
At the time I had a hand full of music junkie friends, all of which were either saving up to buy their decks, or had already taken the plunge. We'd spend available days between classes and finals digging through the local record store crates in search of gems. Some stores had listening stations, and we'd easily grind out 4-5 hour store session auditioning hundreds of records. We'd also order records online and meet up weekend nights to drink and listen until we all passed out in front of the speakers.
Somewhere along the line people started graduating and moving away. My turntables and crates of records were boxed up and lugged from place to place as I jumped from job to job and city to city. My crates of records and boxed turntables hibernated under my bed and in my closet for years. I was very close to selling them when all of a sudden I moved into my own place, and finally had room to set everything up.
My setup must have felt like Rip Van Winkle, it had gone to sleep and unknowingly woken up in the far future. The first time I got the tables up and running I realized that every record I owned was nearly 10 years old. The kids were using laptops with their tables these days, and I didn't even own a laptop. So I picked up a used macbook and Traktor Scratch Pro in an attempt to catch up to the times. It was a blast hearing freshly downloaded songs played through the decks and mixer.
After the nostalgia of limitless tracks on my turntables wore off I shifted focus to the small collection of vinyl that I nearly parted ways with. I'm starting to slowly clean, rip, photograph, and document each disc in lossless digital format. This way I can enjoy to the collection that's quietly followed me around since the turn of the century on my phone or in the car.
Also, I've decided to make a new edition of this blog, Vinyl Saturdays. Starting tomorrow every Saturday I'll rip and post a song from my vinyl archives. The track will be the converted from analog to digital using my setup and posted for your enjoyment. I'm looking forward to sharing my re-discovery and (potential new-discovery of b-sides or whatnot) here on The End Starts Today.

Tinn
Today is for chillin' and this song is the perfect soundtrack for such. The smoothness, the composure, and tranquility created by these simple notes is very captivating. The composition of sounds gels together nicely, especially those bells that ding ever so softly. Enjoy!

You
Brace yourself for a dark and eerie track. The slowness of the song with the rapid hits of the snare creates plenty of drama, not to mention those thunderous bass drum hits. This echo-y track slowly builds momentum while keeping the same creepy tone. Enjoy!

Me & U
The droplets of piano in conjunction with the long synth notes is wonderful. What stands out to me more is the back and forth whispering sample of "baby tell me how you like it". All these things create an extremely sexy track. Enjoy!

Only You Can Show Me
The second I get a whiff of warm weather, the summer time tracks hit in full force. This track kicks off the first note with some bongos that scream 80 degree weather. The Mereki hook is fantastic, echoing over and over about how only I can show this beautiful thing *fill in the blank*. The electric sounds are bright and upbeat, positive sounding and uplifting. Enjoy!

Select Sundays: To Build a Home
This is that movie trailer song you really liked but forgot to Shazam to figure out what it was. This is that song you heard on So You Think You Can Dance. This is that song backgrounding your favorite television dramas, as someone cries and cries. This is that song you'll listen to again and again.

West Ghost
Her lyrics stick. There's so much goodness in this track. The hook has a funky swing, with a touch of R&B that is easy to hum after the song is over. The part that has me coming back is the rasp of her voice in conjunction with her rhyme style. There's an attitude that's created and it's one that I wish was my own, she's untouchable and persistent, she'll get what she's after that's the only thing certain. Enjoy!

Medicine
I fell in love with the sounds of Daughter late last year. Recently I've heard the magic that Sound Remedy has applied to the soft and delicate sounds that Daughter is responsible for. This isn't the proper forum for me to vent about how much crap has been made in the name of Dubstep, but this is the proper forum to declare that Sound Remedy is not part of the aforementioned. This ballad is a beautiful and emotionally expensive experience. Enjoy!

Chill Back
When it's a gloomy stay-at-home day, a track like this can find its way to my ear in seconds. The laid back beat, with the chilled out keys truly deserves the name "Chill Back". This puts me in the mood to sit on the couch with the volume up and sip on some tea. Enjoy!

White Lies
I love to discover older tracks, especially when something new brings them back to the surface. It's awesome that Grafix & Fred V even said "Very cool fan made video of one of our golden oldies, check it out!" on their FB page. How fans and artists collaborate, communicate, and overall relate these days simply blows my mind. I love it. This track is hard hitting, cuts fast and aggressively, hitting hard in all the right places. Enjoy!

Leave The Lights On
I love the lyrics and melody of this track. Her voice is the perfect balance of cute, independent, and musical. There's an Ellie Goulding sound to this track, which I'm not sure whether to credit Bronze Whale's remix or Meiko's melody to. The song flows incredibly well, with those signature dubsteppy bass drum builds and breakdowns accompanying Meiko's acoustic guitar. Enjoy!

Select Sundays: Obedear
You've probably been all over the Purity Ring album already, I mean, we covered them back in July. This song has soaked itself back into my subconsciousness though. I think it may be the Grimes-like feel of the track. Whatever it is, I'm digging the atmosphere this song sets as I put it on massive repeat.

Kartell
This track melds soul and the sounds of turntablism perfectly. The song maintains a fantastic flow, even while lots of baby scratches pepper the track. The vocals are rich, the horns and electric guitar bring a dash of soul/funk to season the track with spicy and full flavor. Whether you're feeling sexy, independent, or heart broken there's something in here for you. Enjoy!

Syncopy
I love air drumming to the percussion on this track. Those big bass notes hit deep and monstrous, picking up the pace of the track more than any other single element. I'm not sure of the mood that this song creates for me, sometimes it's a middle of the night and nobody is around mood. Other times it's a dark and revengeful mood, soundtrack to a serial killer. Enjoy!

Home & Consonance
I love how this song could have been a silky R&B track upon the first few measures. Those smooth vocals and soft synths pave a satin path. Then the aggressive drums jump out from behind the curtain, and the xylophone follows suit. Two percussion elements completely change the song, and I love it. The track finishes with the same silky laden vocals that graced the start. Enjoy!

Turn Me Out
In my ears Russ Chimes can do no wrong. I love the high energy that his tracks bring, without the seemingly necessary cheese that most other high energy dance music seems to be coupled with. There's a cinematic element to this track, something Russ Chimes has a knack for as seen on his Midnight Club EP music video trilogy. Enjoy!

Breathing Underwater
This fun little ditty brings back a new life to Metric's song. I love the electronic organ that hits you like a tidal wave when she sings "Is this my life?". The original track is already great, and touching a great song for a remix is no easy feat. The sounds that MNDR used to recreate this track are fun and bouncy, hearing it at the beginning of spring makes me yearn for that summer weather. Enjoy!

Select Sundays: Never Never
Aaron Jerome, aka SBTRKT ("subtract"), likes to remain semi-anonymous because then his music can speak for itself. Along with that, he tends to wear masks, which is kind of cool. Until you realize they are all modern interpretations of native cultures. Cultural misappropriation? Who knows. Either way, this track, featuring Sampha, quite caught my attention. Enjoy.

Open
I first heard the Jeff Samuel Faded mix of this track, and could not get enough. The track is super deep with an amazing sample that rings "faded... faded... faded..." through my mind hours after listening. It gave me that feeling of not wanting to share it, because it was special. Then I remembered that I love sharing good music, and this is too good not to share. The builds and breaks are throttled perfectly, not overly dramatic yet extremely interesting and resonant.
Then I heard the original again for the first time. To my surprise I had a copy on my computer that's over a year old, but I suppose it wasn't until the Jeff Samuel remix did I think to give it the time of day. The song is delicate and vulnerable. I love how the song yields the illusion of being stripped down and simple at first, until you notice how many instruments are poking their heads out. Normally each post is one song, but there's always an exception to the rule, and this song is an exception. Enjoy!

Wowshit
The driving bassline of this song is amazing. I get a warm and relaxing feeling of summer when I allow myself to immerse into this song. The track isn't too bright and carefree, with low frequency synths lurking around and gentle horn blasts letting you know that this song was created for night time. Enjoy!

Asleep On The Beach
I could totally fall asleep on the beach to this track. Taking the song slightly less literal, it's apparent that the song works in far more settings than sleepy time on the sand. The meld of piano and hard cut electronic instruments is the perfect balance. For me the icing on the cake is the slap bass that comes in with the drums. Enjoy!

I'm A Cliché
This song is very beautiful in the most basic sense of the word. But what really attracts me to this track is how the title of the song relates to the audio. I don't like being called a cliché, and when I say that I am a cliché it is always in a demeaning tone. For that reason this otherwise bright and cheery song brings a bit of self disgust. The real beauty is that another listener will pull a completely different emotion and idea from the same song and title. Enjoy!
