Radio Ladio

This dance-y track surprised me when I heard, "Her name is R-A, D-I, Ohhh. L-A, D-I, Ohhh". It's so fun, so good, makes me want to jump up and dance hard when I hear it. The funky guitars and clapping at the beginning are a fun touch along with the somewhat quirky percussion.

Tiger

I was torn choosing only one song off of their album The Archer Trilogy Pt. 2, but this track spoke to me at this moment. Their vocals go so well together, her airy and slightly eerie voice along with his vocals supporting in a near invisible way makes for quite the sound. Couple that pairing with the dynamic use of electronic sounds and I'm won over. Enjoy!

Vinyl Saturdays: Can You Feel What I Feel

This song captures the sound that I could not stop dancing to around 2001.  The drums are strong and fast.  The synths are smooth, soulful, and warm. And that bassline grabs your feet and effortlessly moves them accordingly. I dig the patient breakdown explaining in humble words how this genius of work has come from his fingertips, whoever the sample is of (I don't know for sure).

There is a bit of record noise in the left channel towards the end of the track. I washed this one as best I could, but with buying used records this sorta thing comes along with the territory. Enjoy!

Pizza Guy

I'm feeling very into beautifully layered synths lately, and this song hits me upside the head hard with that winning formula. I also appreciate the fun use of samples that jump and wiggle through the song. My favorite part of this track is smack at the front of the song, the build is just asking to be a set opener. Enjoy!

Zig

Anyone who says music is a magical journey, has obviously just listened to this track. Welcome to synth layer heaven. The bouncy bassline keeps everything on track and the keyboards literally go wild all over the track. It's the sign of a great track that even after 7 entire minutes of the same song, I'm ready to push repeat. Enjoy!

If So

The signature sound of Atlas Genius is, for lack of better words, genius. I love the upbeat melody and the singable lyrics.

"If so, if so. we know we'll be coming!"

Enjoy!

Triadzz

Recently I've been attracted to slow, easy, beautiful songs to start my week off to, but this week is different. Today I'm feeling in-your-face loud and proud, and that's what this song is. Blam Blam Blam, the sounds hit you hard and bright, the bass drum is huge. Hello beginning of the week, I've arrived. Enjoy!

You've probably already danced to this song, unless you've been in a coma for the last week. There's tons of hype for this album, and deservedly so -these guys are the masters of their craft. Enjoy!

Vinyl Saturdays: Water Ride

4/20 is a famous day, and in 2013 4/20 is record store day. What better celebration of such a day than to post another Vinyl Saturdays post!?

This track took me on a journey the first time I heard it. I found it at a thrift store in San Francisco along with about a dozen other records. I could tell they were all from the same donator. After hearing half of the dozen, I went back and bought the other 16 records at that thrift store that appeared to come from the same donation. I couldn't really go wrong for $1/ea!! I'm very pleased with this track as well as many of the other records in that haul. After a wash, rip, and a photo op here it is. Enjoy!

In The End

I envision this track playing to the credits of a great movie. It plays beautifully, with colorful notes generating a positive blanket of electronic sounds wrapping your ears. Her voice has something international about it, I can't put my finger on it, but it made sense that this is something that comes out of Sweden. Enjoy!

I Was A Fool

The second single off of Tegan and Sara's latest is I Was A Fool, if you haven't heard it I'm pretty sure you will. Matthew Dear puts a dark and bass heavy twist on this heartfelt ballad by my favorite indie rocker twins (no really, I'm an enormous T&S fan if you didn't already know). I admire what Matthew Dear did with this song, in fact the remix could easily replace the original in the amazing official lyric video (Drive movie intro anyone?) from an overall tone perspective. Enjoy!

House Of Deer

This song plays long, and as it plays I feel as though I'm only able to move in slow motion. The heartbeat of the song is that opening electronic bassline, of which each element builds off of. The ambient sounding vocals, the muted drums, and industrial abandoned warehouse existence converge to create this 6+ minutes of music. Enjoy!

Beat Dun Drop

Once in a while I prefer to listen to music on my headphones vs through the speakers at my desk. Luckily I threw on my headphones to listen to this song before posting, as I had only heard it via the speakers prior. I was surprised just how dramatic the left - right cuts were until I had the headphones on. I almost went dizzy.

At times I feel that this track is in the vein of today's top EDM hits, and at other times I feel as though this track is doing its own thing in a way that really works. The samples are perfect, the breakdowns aren't overly cheesy, but the build ups remind me being in a vegas club dancing to the latest from the radio. Finally, that keyboard melody does a great job lightening up mood. Enjoy!

Your New Beloved

It was easy choosing this track to post, but it is not easy for me to write about this song. I'm not sure what feelings this track pulls out of me. Aesthetically the track is beautiful, and the overall emotion are all that come with a recent love lost. But there's more to this track than an optimistic outlook at the good times of a relationship and the hopeful future over a pretty beat. The only way to find out is more listening. Enjoy!

Vinyl Saturdays: Shoo Be Do

I picked up this gem from the local thrift store, and was feeling the island vibe right up until I did a quick google search on the band. They're from Kansas City?! Hey, the more obscure the better I say! I love how this song puts a smile across my face. The track is fun to sing along to, it's the kind of jam you dance to with gentle rhythm but strong feeling. Enjoy!

Navy Light

When she sings "cause without you I cease to exist" I was immediately won over. I can't gush enough at how beautiful it sounds. The track gives great detail about shirt smells and smiles causing tears, a real tear jerker if you are feeling blue from a recent relationship fail. but this song brings nothing but happiness to me since it is put together so well. Enjoy!

Lightning Bolt

I'm taken back in time with this true rock song. I feel as though the timeless sound of electric guitar and gritty vocals will always sound good. The track is short, full of energy, and comes with a rock and roll attitude. Enjoy!

Falling In Love

The reviews I've read about this song re-occuringly tout the disclaimer of "slow to start so be patient, it does pay off". I would never have said that about this song. The track starts off minimal, like most of my favorite house tracks, then gradually and pleasantly builds. When the high hat, bell, and snare stop the bassline drops hard further accentuating it's entrance. The bass drop just after the 1min mark is perfect, this song would be a dream to throw into a midnight set towards the end.  The piano is the clincher, until you hear the perfect use of that amazing vocal sample, which you cannot miss. Enjoy!

Jack

One of the few words that I don't mind being rhymed with itself is "body".

"I want your body
everybody wants your body
so let's jack, let's jack"

It's super gutsy to have such a stripped down introduction that goes for over 1 minute with nothing but vocals along a singe hit percussion with hand claps. When the bassline and drums kick in you sure can feel it. The song builds wonderfully, while maintaining the raunchy raw feeling of a garage or warehouse party. Enjoy!

Elliot Uppercut

The combination of Jupiter and Mr. Gonzo creating this shimmery disco inspired track is just what I needed.  The melody of this song is expansive, her vocals flowing up and down symbiotically to the beat is supreme. The track is sexy and glamorous, there's charisma and the track comes off hot. I normally am not a fan of cheesy sound effects, but the boxing ring bell "ding" somehow works its way into this song in a genuine way. Enjoy!

Select Sundays: Soft Kiss

Back in the day, we were huge fans of Lemonade Stand, the game where you take your little corner shop to citywide dominancen. If you remember the magic formula for lemons, sugar, and ice cubes, you're a star. In my mind, this San Francisco - Brooklyn band is paying homage to the classic game with their name. Right? Right?

Vinyl Saturdays:Everything

The warm smooth fluid sounds of this track from 2000 has the elements of deep house that drove me to buy so many records. I love hearing her voice breathe out that she wants to be my everything. I'm able to vividly picture the euphoria that this song, dense smoke, and a dance floor provide. It's sexy, it's deep, and it's 13 years old -and completely timeless. Enjoy!

Ride On/Right On

It took me a few listens to find out what it was that made this song so magnetic for me. Then it hit me. The dynamic between the percussion and the rest of the track.  Right up front there are two prominent sounds, 1.) his awesome vocals, and 2.) what sounds like cowboy boots with bells stomping on a wood floor. Then I notice the electric guitar in the back along with the bass and keyboards. It really works for me, and I hope you too. Enjoy!

So High

This track reminds me of jj, and how much I love this style of song. The amount of time spent without drums makes the track float in the air like a small cloud. The vocals and lyrics are a perfect match, there's nothing harsh about this song and the vocals follow suit. Kick back when you're in slow motion mood and put this track on. Enjoy!

The End Starts Today Mixtape #7

In January 2013 I set a goal of making one mixtape per month to post here on The End Starts Today.  Here we are at the beginning of April, and I'm just now posting my first mixtape of 2013. I fell flat on my face with no decent excuse. So fuck new year resolutions, I'll make and post mixtapes whenever possible and that's what I'll stick to. Can't fail at that one!

This mixtape runs 37 minutes across 8 tracks. I am becoming more and more partial to 30-40 minute mixes opposed to the 1hr + mixes that I used to attempt. This mixtape represents how I've felt in the beginning of 2013, mainly positive and moving forward. Enjoy!

Tracklist:
  1. Nightvision (Overture) - Esc 不在
  2. Just Goodbye - Best Friends

Inspect A Horse

This playful track not so curiously similar in sound to "Inspector Norse", is Pat Lok's reply to Todd Terje's track inspired by Whateverest. This version is a bit more houseified and slightly less whimsical in composition. I dig the reverberating samples saying inspector, inspector, inspector in a funky French filtered house fashion. Solid dancing tune. Enjoy!

Penny

This laid back track from the genius collaborative Classixx is right up my alley. The song feels like it was composed with chillin' out in mind, vs dancing. The heavy reverb on the vocal sample hula hoops back and forth, and the warm inviting synths carry the song from beginning to end. I'd put this on my poolside playlist, if I had a pool. Enjoy!
